Torture Movies
I was reading some local news the other day when I came across a disturbing item. The deranged Christopher Schneider, of unincorporated Antioch Township IL, raped and tortured a woman who appeared to be an acquaintance of his [source article].  One detail from the story stood out to me (emphasis added):

He tied her up with a belt, [Lake County Assistant State’s Attorney Patricia] Fix said, and when she struggled free, he placed duct tape around her arms, legs and mouth.

Schneider repeatedly told the woman he was going to kill her, Fix said, and at one point held a cordless reciprocating saw to her neck and told her she was going to die.

The saw part seemed too specific, as though he was imitating something.. to test this theory I did a search for "hostel 2 spoilers" and found this "plot" detail [source]:

Meanwhile Todd gets ready to use a power saw on Whitney, but the cord won’t reach. He continues to scare her, but ends up accidentally scalping her.

Hmm.. I wonder where this psychopath got the image of taunting a bound woman with a power saw in his mind?

Before you disregard me as being crazy let me just say: Christopher Schneider is 100% accountable for his actions. No one forced him to do what he did and he should be held solely responsible. However, we need to recognize that we are supporting the media that glorifies actions like his. He's to blame for his actions but we all implicitly gave him ideas.

In the past three years we've seen a deluge of torture films hit the theaters. These are different than how horror films of the past have been presented. These paint a romantic image of the torturer. He is seen as all-powerful and his victims as totally helpless. His control over others is absolute, almost godlike. He even survives at the end to torture another day. To a sick mind he becomes a sympathetic figure, something to aspire to. If you're demented and in a powerless position in life you now have a role model. I have no idea if this particular deranged individual saw "Hostel 2" but it would be shocking if he missed out on all of these films.

I'm a free-market Libertarian at heart. I don't support banning or regulating these wretched films. All I can ask is that sane people stop paying for them. If no one watches them, they'll stop making them. Intelligent people should be able to understand when they are supporting something evil and make the conscious decision to stop.
