Clinton Plantation
Senator Hillary Clinton (D-NY) kicked-off a political clamor by claiming that the U.S. House of Representatives "has been run like a plantation, and you know what I'm talking about." [1] Apparently this was supposed to be a slavery reference. Not being a 140+ year old ex-slave I have no idea what she's talking about. To try and understand what she meant, I did a little research to understand the similarities between being a member of the U.S. House of Representatives and a 19th century slave:

U.S. Representative
19th Century Slave
Annual Salary $162,100 [2] $0
Days Worked Per Year ~163 [3] 365
Retirement Benefits Up to 80% of final salary annually for life [4] Free dirt for grave
Length of Term 2 years Life
Status of Offspring Typically able to enter an ivy league college even if grossly unqualified Also slaves
Working Climate Air-conditioned offices Outdoors in hot southern climate
Travel Opportunities Lobbyists frequently pay for posh “fact finding” trips to exotic destinations If able to escape the plantation a 19th century slave may enjoy a trip on the scenic underground railroad, if caught they may face severe corporal punishment and/or death
Occupational Hazards Ethics probe, intern you’re having an affair with disappears making you the focus of a police investigation Heat-stroke, exhaust, horse-whippings, female slaves often raped by masters
