I've been chipping
away at this Tiamat RPG Framework project for some time now. After wrapping up
the final 0.2 release I started brainstorming for some new demo ideas. I went
back and looked at several RPGs I played in the past to create a list of the style elements
that I thought were good & bad. It's something I do from time to time when
working on "Tiamat wish list" (plus it
gives me an excuse to play some games).
One game I spent
time reviewing was Chrono
Cross. I played it a couple of years ago and thought
it was one of the best RPGs I'd seen. As a one-man-shop I couldn't hope to
create something nearly as detailed. However, there were certain style elements
of the game that could be used in a less graphically intensive environment. As
with any game, there were a few annoyances I re-discovered in Chrono
Cross. This
is not meant to bash the game; the good elements outweigh the bad by an awful
lot. It's just a way of saying that even a great RPG can have some room for
improvement so here are a few things to avoid. If you own Playstation 1 or 2 and
like RPGs I'd highly recommend picking up this game (especially since it's
widely available for under $20). Sure, it doesn't look as good as Final Fantasy
X-whatever but it's still a top-notch RPG.
Spoiler Warning: This little article contains all kinds of
spoilers about Chrono
Cross. It's probably a bad idea to read it if you ever
plan to play the game.
